Will antibiotics clear up sinusitis?
Ralph Metson, MD

Sinusitis develops when the pinpoint openings that drain the sinuses into the nose become blocked. Mucus collects in the obstructed sinuses and bacteria grows within the sinus cavities causing inflammation and associated symptoms. Traditionally, antibiotics have been prescribed to treat sinusitis, as they eradicate bacteria and allow the patient to feel better faster. If antibiotics are not prescribed, most cases of sinusitis will eventually clear on their own, but it may take longer. I strongly favor a non-antibiotic approach for initial symptoms of sinusitis, particularly nasal congestion and nasal drainage. If symptoms persist longer than a week then it’s time to think about contacting your doctor, perhaps starting a course of antibiotics.
