Will I Have Sexual Fantasies after Menopause?

By:
Ruth Westheimer

Question :

I'm a 44-year-old woman, and though menopause hasn't started affecting me yet, I know it's coming and I'm scared of what's going to happen to me. I've been reading lots of books and I think I know about the physical changes, but one question that's been bugging me is, does a woman continue to have sexual fantasies after menopause?

Answer :

So many women feel at menopause that life is over. That would be a terrible state of affairs, especially as people live so much longer now. I want you to put all of those worries aside. The only changes that occur from menopause are the cessation of menses and less lubrication in the vagina, so a lubricant has to be used. Women most certainly do continue to have sexual fantasies after menopause. They may even become better because you have more experience and knowledge and because you might feel freer in your sexual expression since you don't have to worry about getting pregnant.
